Homework (שִׁעוּרֵי בַּיִת) 10-Oct-17

Youtube: Conversation with simple questions

and also master all the material for this lesson https://www.hebrewpodcasts.com/lesson1.php

HEBREW CLASS OUTLINE

Phase 1: Learning the Aleph-Bet, and some new words

We will go through the primer and learn the letters, sounds, a few new words, and simple dialog/sentences.

Needed Books:

Hebrew: A Language Course Primer ( Amazon Link)

Hebrew/English Dictionary (not necessary until around the second half of this phase) (Amazon Link)

Photo:

The Ben Yehuda dictionary is usually very cheap, maybe a dollar or two plus shipping ($3.99) Any Hebrew/English dictionary will work.

Phase 2: Reading, Writing and Building Vocabulary

While there is some introduction to written Hebrew script in the primer, it is not really used until you start writing in Hebrew. This book introduces writing in Hebrew. There are little stories, comprehension questions and some grammar rules.

Needed Books:

Hebrew: A Language Course Level One (Amazon Link)

Hebrew Verb Tables (Amazon Link)

Verb books are a necessary part of learning a new language. Verb conjugation/verb tenses (past/present/future/etc) are completely different than what you are used to. Some verb books are better than others.. I recommend this one, but almost any verb book will work.

At some point during this phase, we can also begin reading the Torah in Hebrew. (See the optional book list)

Phase 3: Reading, Writing and Building Vocabulary (continued)

Stories and grammar with a little more complexity than Book 1.

Needed Books:

Hebrew: A Language Course Level 2 (Amazon Link)

Also during this phase we will be reading from the Torah (if we had not already started in the previous phase), even though it isn’t in the ‘needed books’ list. We can decide later (as a group) how to pursue Hebrew Torah readings. All the books above are shown as they appear in Amazon.com. That is where I bought them. You can search by name or by ISBN number. The Hebrew textbooks you can also find at the publisher’s webpage (www.behrmanhouse.com), but it will probably be more expensive than amazon. I recommend buying used books because they are cheaper, however there is the possibility of having someone else’s answers (right or wrong :-) and notes written in the book. This may or may not bother you. The list of books on the next page is from www.Artscroll.com. Why are we learning Hebrew? To better understand the Torah.. so, you will at some point need a copy of the Torah (in Hebrew) for yourself. The ‘interlinear’ format of these books makes it easy to see English and Hebrew at the same time at any given point in your reading. You can usually get each book for around $20 and it also has a little commentary as well. It wont be necessary to have them until somewhere in the second phase at the earliest I think. There are also periodic sales at artscroll around the holidays. Once we decide how to pursue this as a group, we can pick a book to read from (probably Bereshit/Genesis).
